Blades set for Wembley showpiece

Sheff Utd v Preston

Sheffield United and Preston could not be separated in the first leg of their play-off semi-final so Wembley, and ultimately the Premier League, still beckon for both when they meet again on Monday.

Blades midfielder Brian Howard scored early in the second half to nullify North End centre-back Sean St Ledger’s 21st minute strike but with away goals exempt, the tie is evenly poised.

United boss Kevin Blackwell was gushing in praise for his players after the game and declared himself delighted to be heading to Bramall Lane all square, though quickly warned his squad the job is far from done.

The Yorkshiremen will be confident of advancing, though, what with their vociferous home support and the fact they haven’t lost at their own address since February.

Nevertheless, Blackwell may have to do without powerful striker Darius Henderson and fellow offensive options David Cotterill and Jamie Ward who are all carrying knocks.

That could lead to a start for on-loan West Brom forward Craig Beattie and having spurned two late chances on Friday night, the Scot will be eager to atone and fire his temporary employees into the top-flight showdown.

Far from downbeat at failing to snatch a home win, Preston boss Alan Irvine is adamant his side are still in the tie but did tell his charges they will need to play a lot better if they are to prevail.

For Andrew Lonergan, though, it is a case of keep up the good work.

The 25-year-old made some crucial saves, including smothering a Beattie shot at the death, leading Irvine to call his stopper one of the best ‘keepers in the Championship.

In contrast, North End had one of the worst away records in the division until recently with just three victories in their opening 21 games on the road.

However, Irvine’s men have won their last two away fixtures, beating Doncaster and Birmingham - a side they hope to join in the Premier League next season.

Unfortunately though that dream may be shattered; with the Blades faithful behind them United should nick it, sealing their place in football’s richest game.

Verdict: Sheff Utd 2-1 Preston
